About this book

Solid chemisorption technology is an effective form of energy conversion for recovering low-grade thermal energy, but limited thermal conductivity and agglomeration phenomena greatly limit its performance. Over the past 20 years, researchers have explored the use of thermal conductive porous matrix to improve heat and mass transfer performance. Their efforts have yielded composite sorption technology, which is now extensively being used in refrigeration, heat pumps, energy storage, and de-NOx applications. This book reviews the latest technological advances regarding composite solid sorbents. Various development methods are introduced and compared, kinetic models are presented, and different cycles are analyzed.
Given its scope, the book will benefit experts involved in developing novel materials and cycles for energy conversion, as well as engineers working to develop effective commercialized energy conversion systems based on solid sorption technology

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
In this chapter, we give a summary for the solid composite sorbents, including the fundamental principle, theory and working pairs of solid sorption, properties of composite sorbents with expanded natural graphite (ENG) matrix, as well as the energy conversion cycles of solid composite sorbents. Basically, the features and the development of solid composite sorbents are discussed thoroughly.

Chapter 2. Development of Solid Composite Sorbents
Abstract
This chapter introduces techniques for developing different solid composite sorbents in detail, including processing ENG without or with graphite intercalation compounds (GICs), and developing the composite solid sorbents with ENG, activated carbon, activated carbon fiber and silica gel by simple mixture and consolidation or impregnation and compression.
Liwei Wang, Guoliang An, Jiao Gao, Ruzhu Wang
Chapter 3. Properties of Solid Composite Sorbents
Abstract
Continuing the contents of Chap. 2, anisotropic thermal conductivity and permeability of consolidated ENG are first presented in this chapter. Based on ENG, thermal conductivity, permeability and sorption capacity of different solid composite sorbents such as AC/ENG, silica gel/ENG, halide/ENG are summarized, following by properties of composite solid sorbents with activated carbon fiber, activated carbon and silica gel.

Chapter 4. Kinetics of Solid Composite Sorbents
Abstract
In this chapter, the typical equilibrium principles and phenomena in halide-ammonia based composite sorbents are introduced. Advantages and shortcomings of several classical non-equilibrium models are analyzed. After that several recently discovered sorption phenomena are discussed, and finally, several new directions for the development of kinetic models for halide-ammonia based composite sorbents are proposed.
