Abstract

This chapter delves into Turkey's transformation from a regional model democracy to an authoritarian regime under Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, focusing on the impact on public diplomacy. It explores the shift from soft power to sharp power, highlighting the use of public diplomacy tools by authoritarian regimes. The text examines the erosion of democratic values and the rise of Erdoganism, analyzing how these changes have reshaped Turkey's global reputation and public diplomacy strategies. It also discusses the role of civil society, corruption, and the politicization of public diplomacy tools. The chapter concludes with a comparative analysis of public diplomacy during democratization and democratic backsliding, providing insights into the future of public diplomacy in an increasingly authoritarian world.
