Abstract

The chapter begins by introducing the public sector's critical role in meeting carbon reduction objectives under the 2015 Paris Agreement. It highlights the significant influence of government agencies and public authorities on various areas of emissions, such as energy usage, transportation, and procurement. The public sector, accounting for a substantial portion of GDP in many countries, is essential for achieving national decarbonisation goals. The text delves into the challenges and opportunities faced by different subsectors within the public sector, including educational institutions, healthcare facilities, and office buildings. It emphasizes the need for sustainable policies and government incentives to drive decarbonisation efforts. Notable case studies from various countries are presented, showcasing innovative solutions and strategies implemented by governments and local authorities. The chapter also discusses the importance of community engagement and public participation in decarbonisation projects, highlighting the need for collaborative efforts between stakeholders. Additionally, it addresses the challenges and barriers to implementation, such as technological limitations and institutional cultures, and offers insights into overcoming these obstacles. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the significance of decarbonisation strategies and the role of the public sector in achieving a sustainable future.
