About this book

This book focuses on pulsed alternators design and applications. Both principles and design methods have been addressed. This is achieved by providing in-depth study on a number of major topics such as electrical design, thermal management, mechanical analysis, and special application. The research results and practical experience accumulated in the preliminary research, the National Natural Science Foundation of China and other major cooperative projects. Taking the pulse alternator as the core component, the entire pulse alternator system is systematically introduced, including the electromagnetic design, thermal management analysis, mechanical performance analysis of the pulse alternator, the introduction of the electromagnetic weapon load, the control technology of the pulse alternator power system, and the elaboration of other key components of the power system. This motor has been researched at home and abroad, but this book is the first international monograph on the field of pulse alternators in this field, which has very important academic value and reference value. The book benefits researchers, engineers, and graduate students in fields of electrical engineering, pulsed power, etc.

Chapter 1. Overview of High-Power Pulsed Power Supply
Abstract
The research on pulsed power technology and high-power pulsed power supply was initiated in the 1930s and has developed rapidly since the 1960s. As an emerging technology, it is gradually growing into an independent discipline.
Shaopeng Wu, Shumei Cui
Chapter 2. Basic Theories of Pulsed Alternators
Abstract
Inertial energy storage is an energy storage technology that stores energy with moving objects. It is often used in homopolar or pulsed alternators. This book didn’t mention homopolar alternators due to their low output voltage, while focused on pulsed alternators instead. Pulsed alternators usually take rotors as their energy storage body under the speed of thousands of revolutions or even tens of thousands of revolutions per minute, allowing for the storage of large amounts of energy.
Shaopeng Wu, Shumei Cui
Chapter 3. Electromagnetic Design of Pulsed Alternators
Abstract
Because of their special structure and operating conditions, the pulsed alternators’ design method and operating characteristics are different from the conventional ones. This chapter mainly expounds following aspects: the design methods of pulsed alternators, including the choice of poles, phases and main dimensions, calculation of electromagnetic parameters, analysis of no-load magnetic field and discharging characteristics, the establishment of mathematical model, the analysis of pulsed alternators by finite element modeling, and the introduction of its design process.
Shaopeng Wu, Shumei Cui
Chapter 4. Thermal Management of Pulsed Alternators
Abstract
In order to resist the momentary discharge impact and high-speed centrifugal force, the stator and rotor winding of the air-core CPA is usually encased in composite materials and epoxy resins, and these materials have a very low thermal conductivity.
Shaopeng Wu, Shumei Cui
Chapter 5. Mechanical Performance of Pulsed Alternators
Abstract
Compensated Pulsed Alternators (CPAs) typically operate at high speed to obtain higher inertial energy storage and reverse potential for higher energy storage and power densities. CPA is subjected to extremely high mechanical stress. Moreover, during pulsed discharging, the excitation current and discharge current are very high, there exists a very strong magnetic field, in the motor instantaneously. Some components of the motor are therefore subjected to a great instantaneous electromagnetic force, which directly threatens the security of CPA, so the mechanical stress, electromagnetic stress and key component strength are required to be analyzed and verified. The introduction of fiber resin composites with high strength-density ratio decreases the quality and increases the speed of the air core CPA, which greatly improves the energy density and power density. However, due to the anisotropy characteristics of the mechanical characteristics of fiber resin composite materials, the lateral strength of fiber is much lower than the vertical strength. It is necessary to carry out a safety assessment for reasonable parameters design.
Shaopeng Wu, Shumei Cui
Chapter 6. Controlling Technology for Pulsed Alternators
Abstract
The measurement and control system is the auxiliary device of the pulsed alternator power supply system. Its main task is to complete the monitoring and protection of the system reliably.
Shaopeng Wu, Shumei Cui
Chapter 7. Electromagnetic Weapon Load of Pulsed Power Supply
Abstract
Electromagnetic weapon is a new super-high-speed transmitter that uses electric energy to provide thrust for projectiles, including electromagnetic gun and electrothermal gun. The electromagnetic gun is a device that uses electromagnetic force to push projectiles, and the electrothermal gun is a device that uses electric energy to heat the working fluid and push the projectile.
Shaopeng Wu, Shumei Cui
Chapter 8. Pulsed Power Switch Components
Abstract
Switching element occupies a special position in pulsed power system because the parameters and characteristics of switching element have the most direct and sensitive influence on the rising time, amplitude, etc. of pulse. The switch works under high voltage and high current, which means the working conditions are not very ideal. The breakdown in the switch and the discharging process in the switch electrodes are both very complex.
Shaopeng Wu, Shumei Cui
Chapter 9. Pulsed Alternator Drive System
Abstract
Drive system, as the energy input component of the pulsed alternator power supply, plays a decisive role in the performance of the whole system. During the initial energy storage process, the prime mover drives the pulsed alternator to speed up from 0 to the rated speed, this process converts the electrical energy into mechanical energy in the rotor of the pulsed alternator.
