Quadrupole Ordering and Inverse Magnetocaloric Effect in a Magnet with Biquadratic Exchange and Spin S = 1

Abstract

This paper studies the conditions for uniaxial quadrupole ordering and the behavior of this ordering in an external magnetic field in a cubic magnet with bilinear and biquadratic exchange and spin \(S = 1.\) It is shown that uniaxial quadrupole ordering arises from a paramagnetic state as a result of a first-order phase transition in temperature and isothermic magnetization is accompanied by a first-order phase transition in the field from a quadrupole state with a weak magnetization to a ferromagnetic state with a strong magnetization. The magnetic entropy of the quadrupole state upon magnetization in low fields increases smoothly with the increasing field and the subsequent magnetization jump in the critical field of the first-order transition also leads to a jump with a sharp increase in magnetic entropy (inverse magnetocaloric effect).
