Abstract

The chapter delves into the underutilization of standardized steel elements in structural design, leading to wasted resources and increased environmental impacts. It presents a novel approach to enhance the sustainability of steel structures by combining mass-produced I-beams with WAAM reinforcement. The study focuses on IPE 200 and IPE 160 sections, strengthened using in-plane and out-of-plane strategies, and evaluates their performance under various loading scenarios. A cradle-to-gate life cycle assessment is conducted, considering European, global, and sustainable datasets to compare the environmental impact of different design solutions. The results highlight the potential of hybrid WAAM I-beams to reduce material consumption and CO2 emissions, particularly in static systems with fixed supports and distributed loading. The chapter also discusses the influence of WAAM mechanical properties on the efficiency of the hybrid solution, paving the way for further research in this promising field.
