Abstract

This chapter delves into the effects of hydrothermal aging on Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) composites, focusing on the degradation mechanisms and internal damage processes. The study employs X-ray micro-computed tomography to analyze the material's microstructure at various water uptake levels and temperatures, revealing the formation and propagation of microcracks, interfacial delamination, and void growth. Key findings highlight the significant impact of temperature and moisture on the material's structural integrity, with detailed observations of matrix degradation and fiber debonding. The research provides valuable insights into the long-term durability of SMC composites, emphasizing the importance of understanding these degradation processes for industrial applications. The study concludes with recommendations for future research, including the use of advanced statistical methods and accelerated aging protocols to further enhance the understanding of material behavior under prolonged environmental stress.
