Abstract

This study delves into the potential of quarry wastes as supplementary cementitious materials, focusing on their mineral composition and impact on concrete compressive strength. Two types of quarry wastes, P1 and P2, were investigated, with P1 being rich in calcium carbonate and P2 containing significant amounts of ferrous oxide. The study found that both types of quarry wastes, when used as cement replacements at rates of 10% and 20%, enhanced the compressive strength of concrete. The use of alkali-activated binders, specifically sodium silicate and sodium bicarbonate, further improved the mechanical performance. The mineral composition of the quarry wastes, including the presence of zinc oxide in P1, was found to play a crucial role in the hydration process and the overall strength of the concrete. The study concludes that quarry wastes represent a promising and sustainable alternative to traditional cementitious materials, with the potential to reduce the environmental impact of the construction industry.
