Abstract

The article delves into the significance of queue length as a measure of effectiveness for assessing the operational performance of signalized intersections, especially under non-lane based traffic conditions. It reviews past studies and methodologies used to define the level of service (LOS) based on various factors such as delay, density, and traffic volume. The study introduces a new methodology for estimating queue length using field data and proposes a model for converting queued vehicles into queue length. The developed model is validated through statistical analysis and compared with existing methods. The article also presents a novel approach to define LOS boundaries based on queue length, providing a physical measure of effectiveness that can be easily anticipated. This research is particularly valuable for understanding and managing traffic congestion in urban areas with mixed traffic conditions, offering a practical solution for transportation professionals.
