Abstract

The article delves into the phenomenon of spoiler effects in elections, where the outcome is disproportionately influenced by the presence of certain candidates. It focuses on the comparison between ranked-choice voting (RCV) and the traditional plurality voting system, highlighting the vulnerabilities and advantages of each. The author introduces a typology of three-candidate preference profiles to systematically identify spoiler candidates under both voting rules. The analysis reveals that RCV generally mitigates spoiler effects more effectively than plurality voting, although specific conditions can still lead to spoiler problems. The study offers valuable insights into the mechanics of electoral systems and their impact on fairness and representation in democratic processes.
