Abstract

The article delves into the re-analysis of the Abutment Angle Method for moderate and deep cover retreat room and pillar mines, aiming to enhance ground control in high-extraction retreat mines. It investigates the loading mechanics using Finite Volume Modeling, which is crucial for understanding the stress redistribution and abutment loads during mining operations. The study compares historical stress measurement data with modern in situ measurements, revealing significant deviations in abutment magnitude and extent. It proposes a predictive formula for calculating the abutment angle based on overburden depth, chain pillar width, and panel span criticality, suggesting lower abutment angles for deeper mines. The research highlights the importance of site-specific parameters and advocates for the use of mine-specific factors to improve the accuracy of pillar design and safety in underground coal mines.
