Abstract

The article investigates the reaction to fire of timber structures encapsulated by multilayer mortar coatings under uniform thermal loading. It highlights the significance of encapsulation in protecting wooden heritage buildings from fire incidents, with a focus on the traditional Chinese 'Di Zhang' multilayer mortar coating. The study examines the thermal properties and microstructure of these coatings using advanced techniques such as Thermogravimetric Analysis and Scanning Electron Microscopy. Experimental methods, including the Fire Propagation Apparatus, are employed to assess key fire parameters such as ignition time, heat release rate, and total heat release. The impact of aggregate particle size, topcoat properties, and the number of fibre reinforcement layers on the fire performance of the coatings is systematically analyzed. The article also addresses the lack of data on crucial fire parameters and the importance of understanding the cracking and delamination of fire-resistant coatings. The findings contribute to enhancing the fire safety of traditional wooden architecture and provide valuable insights into the optimization of encapsulation techniques.
