Abstract

This chapter delves into the recycling of glass fiber-thermoset composites, a material widely used in industries like wind energy, construction, and transportation. The primary focus is on the potential of these composites to serve as supplementary cementitious materials in concrete, addressing the challenges posed by their irreversible crosslinking. The study examines the behavior of composite waste in alkaline environments, highlighting the degradation of polyester resin and the release of organic compounds. It also explores the impact of these degradation products on cement hydration, noting a significant delay in setting time. Additionally, the pozzolanic activity of the composite waste is assessed, revealing a reactivity comparable to that of fly ash. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for further research into the pozzolanic reaction kinetics and the characterization of resin degradation products, paving the way for the valorization of composite waste in cementitious matrices.
