Abstract

This chapter delves into the quest for safer alternatives to the widely used chemical mist suppressant FC-1100 in copper electrowinning processes. It outlines a refined methodology developed by the BASF Tucson laboratory for validating mist suppressants, focusing on surface tension, cathode quality, stability, and solvent extraction compatibility. The text details a series of standard tests and an efficient workflow for laboratory-scale mist suppressant verification, including surface tension measurement, cathode quality assessment, stability testing, mist suppression effect evaluation, and solvent extraction compatibility quality control tests. The chapter highlights the importance of considering multiple factors in the evaluation of mist suppressants and provides insights into the development of more efficient and cost-effective testing methods. It concludes with the identification of two promising alternatives to FC-1100, LixMS™ 430–1 and LixMS™ 500-A, which have passed all required testing and are being tested in large-scale plant trials. The chapter also discusses the potential for scaling down some of the protocols and using simpler methods for mist concentration measurement, offering valuable insights for professionals in the field.
