Abstract

This chapter critically examines Thomas Piketty’s 'Capital in the 21st Century' and its application to ancient economic history. It highlights the limitations of Piketty’s focus on the super-rich and the need for a more inclusive approach that considers the economic status and well-being of the non-elite majority. The author argues that Piketty’s model overlooks important aspects of economic activity and inequality, and suggests that a Rawlsian perspective might offer a more comprehensive understanding of economic history. The chapter also explores the implications of Piketty’s assumptions about pre-modern economic growth and the potential biases in his model. By challenging Piketty’s orientation and calling for a more nuanced approach to economic history, the chapter offers valuable insights into the study of inequality and economic development.
