Abstract

The chapter 'Regional Innovation Factors and the Future of Work' delves into the transformative effects of Industry 4.0 and artificial intelligence on the labor market and regional economies. It begins by tracing the historical evolution of remote work and the demassification of labor, highlighting the acceleration of these trends due to recent economic downturns and the COVID-19 pandemic. The text bridges the gap between the emergence of Industry 4.0 and its expected impact on employment relationships, drawing on reports from the European Commission and the International Labor Organization. The IRISI project, funded by the Bulgarian National Scientific Fund, provides substantial field research on the growth and challenges faced by emerging industries such as creative industries, mobile services, personalized medicine, and eco industries. The chapter emphasizes the need for better cooperation between science and business, as well as the internationalization of businesses to capitalize on growth opportunities. It also discusses the challenges posed by the lack of skilled labor, poor infrastructure, and frequent changes in regulation. The text concludes with recommendations for fostering AI development in Europe, including the creation of AI hubs and the need for better education and training programs to address the skills gap. This chapter offers a detailed and engaging exploration of the complex interplay between technology, innovation, and the future of work.
