Abstract

The study investigates the capillary water absorption mechanisms in red-layer mudstone from central Sichuan, focusing on the relationship between pore structure, microfractures, and water absorption. Using advanced techniques like X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and mercury intrusion porosimetry, the authors reveal the intricate pore network and its influence on water migration. The research highlights the significant impact of microfractures on water absorption, showing that they play a critical role in the capillary water absorption process. The study also discusses the wettability and roughness of the mudstone surface, providing a comprehensive understanding of the water-rock interaction. The findings have important implications for geologists and engineers working on civil engineering projects in areas with red-layer mudstone, helping to mitigate issues like mudstone collapse and civil engineering problems.
