12. Relationships Between Stomach Contents and Radiocesium Contamination of Fish by Fukushima Radioactive Accident in 2011, in Japan

Abstract

The Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant accident emitted radioactive substances into the environment, contaminating forest litter, stream algae, sand substrate, aquatic insects, and fish. In streams, radioactive cesium (radiocesium) concentrations are higher in large fish but vary considerably. The elevated concentrations in large individuals have been considered to attribute to the composition of their diet. We found that large individuals consumed fewer species and less prey mass than did small fish. The high radiocesium concentrations in large fish were unrelated to their diet in the food web. Contamination of stream fish is likely attributed to contamination of their habitats, which results in large variations in radiocesium concentrations in fish, even in fish of the same size.
