Excerpt

The article delves into the reliability and wear evaluation of hydrogen engines in long-term vehicle operation, focusing on the MAN H 2876 UH 01 engine used in Berlin's public buses. It discusses the challenges posed by hydrogen combustion, such as hydrogen embrittlement and increased wear due to high water vapor content. The study provides detailed analyses of engine components, including cylinder liners, pistons, piston rings, valves, and bearings, revealing that while chemical wear is significant, no substantial hydrogen embrittlement was observed. The findings suggest that modern hydrogen engines could achieve a service life comparable to diesel engines with the right materials and maintenance strategies.
