Reliability-Based Design Optimization of Steel Frames Using Genetic Algorithms

Abstract

The chapter delves into the complexities of structural design, emphasizing the need for Reliability-Based Design Optimization (RBDO) to balance cost, safety, and durability amidst uncertainties. It introduces the double-loop RBDO approach, highlighting techniques like SORA, SLA, and SAP to enhance efficiency. The use of Genetic Algorithms for optimization is extensively discussed, along with the application of the First Order Reliability Method (FORM) for reliability analysis. A numerical example of a single-floor steel frame demonstrates the practical implementation of these methods, showcasing the impact of first and second-order analyses on structural reliability and mass optimization. The chapter concludes by underscoring the computational demands and the benefits of using advanced optimization techniques in structural engineering.
