Abstract

Crisis instigated by miscommunication in social media is becoming an alarming phenomenon. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia a racial riot crime that occurred in 2018, causing a loss of life, was instigated by a communication crisis over social media. The proliferation of negative sentiments on social media had evolved into racial riot crimes. The ability of the relevant monitoring body to track the pre-crisis stage is crucial to overcome and avoid the crisis from occurring. Hence, the elements to measure pre-crisis must be first identified. The present study’s researchers proposed that the elements in social network engagement comprising engagement activity, comment polarity, and type of posting influencing social media users’ emotion and reaction via Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS) can be used to formulate crisis detection. The content analysis and sentiment analysis via Application Programme Interface (API) were used in this study. Analysis using smart partial least square (SmartPLS) had shown that polarity and media type significantly correlated with sentiment emotion and reaction at p < 0.05, while engagement activity had not. The model explained that 29.5% of emotion and reactions towards news posting on sensitive issues are influenced by independent variables. The findings indicated that the engagement activity does not affect the emotion and reaction among netizens regardless of how frequent the engagement activity is undertaken. Nevertheless, the media type-posting and polarity significantly contributed to netizens’ emotions. Their reactions can be treated as an element for the pre-crisis detection formula to detect crises in the future.
