Abstract

The chapter delves into the critical issue of landmine detection in Burkina Faso, where terrorist activities have led to the widespread use of homemade explosives. Traditional detection methods, relying on metal sensors, are ineffective against artisanal mines encased in materials like wood, ceramic, or plastic. This work introduces a novel approach using infrared thermography with UAVs to remotely sense these buried mines. The chapter outlines the methodology, materials, and experimental results, showcasing the potential of this technology to enhance safety and efficiency in mine detection. The study highlights the challenges and successes of this method, particularly its effectiveness in detecting non-metallic mines under optimal thermal conditions. The findings offer promising avenues for improving landmine detection in high-risk areas, making this chapter a valuable resource for professionals in the field.
