Mechanisms operative in the removal of air pollutants from the atmosphere are discussed. Formalisms for parameterising dry and wet deposition and chemical conversion are presented. On the basis of literature data, a survey is given on the available information with respect to parameters for the removal of sulphur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and sulphate and nitrate aerosols by these processes. The removal of SO2 and NOX in plumes is treated as a separate case.
