Abstract

The chapter explores the significance of removing fluoride from water and wastewater due to its health implications. It reviews various methods for fluoride removal, including adsorption, ion exchange, chemical precipitation, and electrodialysis. Electrodialysis (ED) and electrodialysis reversal (EDR) are highlighted as effective processes for fluoride removal, with a detailed explanation of their mechanisms and factors affecting their efficiency. The chapter discusses the impact of voltage, temperature, composition, concentration, flow rate, operation time, initial fluoride concentration, feed water nature, pH, and membrane type on fluoride removal. It also presents case studies of real-world applications of ED/EDR for fluoride removal and compares the costs of using these processes.
