Abstract

The article delves into the research and development of technology for producing fused zirconia, a versatile material with applications ranging from refractories and technical ceramics to electronic materials and nuclear industry components. Zirconia's unique crystalline phases and the challenges associated with its volumetric changes are discussed, leading to a focus on stabilized zirconia. The global production of zirconia, particularly fused zirconia, is analyzed, with China being the major producer. The article highlights the importance of domestic production to reduce dependence on imports and ensures technological security. Experimental studies using electric-arc melting equipment are detailed, demonstrating the feasibility of producing stabilized fused zirconia from raw materials like baddeleyite concentrate. The carbothermic reduction of zircon is identified as a promising method for future production, with recommendations for further research and pilot-scale implementation. The article concludes with the potential for establishing a domestic production base, emphasizing the strategic importance of fused zirconia in various industrial applications.
