Abstract

The chapter focuses on the research methodology employed to study the effects of noise on overhead crane operator performances. It begins with an introduction highlighting the high-risk nature of crane operations and the environmental factors, including noise, that can affect operator efficiency. The methodology includes a bibliographic review of crane operation safety issues, analysis of accident cases, and the development of a virtual reality simulator that replicates industrial work conditions. The simulator is used to expose operators to different types of noise while performing cognitive tasks and crane operations. Physiological parameters such as heart rate and galvanic skin response are monitored to assess the impact of noise on the operators' physiological and cognitive functions. Preliminary results show that certain types of noise, particularly modulated noise, significantly influence operator performance and physiological responses. The chapter concludes with corrective measures designed to enhance the reliability of the experimental results and the complexity of the tasks performed by the operators.
