Abstract

The research delves into characterizing the anti-sagging performance of bimodal polyethylene, crucial for manufacturing large-diameter pipes. It compares various methods, including melt flow index, melt strength, and rheological properties, to identify the most effective indicators. The study finds that zero shear viscosity and relaxation time, measured using a rotational rheometer, are the most reliable predictors of anti-sagging performance. Additionally, molecular weight distribution and entanglement density are analyzed to understand their influence on sag resistance. The findings challenge conventional wisdom, suggesting that commonly used methods like melt flow index and degree of entanglement may not accurately reflect anti-sagging performance. This research offers practical guidance for optimizing polyethylene production to enhance the performance of large-diameter pipes.
