Research on Dental Materials for Their Suitability in Building Anthropomorphic Phantoms

Abstract

This chapter delves into the advancement of X-ray tomographic procedures and the necessity of anthropomorphic phantoms for evaluating and optimizing imaging systems. The focus is on the use of 3D printing, specifically fused filament fabrication (FFF), to create these phantoms. Nine commercial dental materials were selected and scanned using a clinical CT facility to analyze their characteristics in terms of Hounsfield Units (HU) across various anode voltages. The study compares these materials to widely used phantom materials and discusses their potential applications in representing different tissues. The results indicate that some materials, such as Temp silic, Gingifast Elastic, and Ellite Double A, exhibit radiological properties similar to compact bone tissues, making them suitable for bone density measurements and quality control phantoms. The chapter concludes by highlighting the potential of these materials in preparing complex anatomical models for X-ray imaging studies.
