Abstract

This chapter delves into the critical role of hard drives in the recycling of rare earth elements, essential for neodymium magnets. It begins by outlining the importance of recycling electrical and electronic devices to recover valuable materials, focusing on hard drives (HDDs) as a significant source of neodymium magnets. The study then examines the Magnet-to-Magnet recycling method and the challenges posed by the hardness of HDD components. The research involves characterizing the materials of HDD casings and magnets using advanced techniques like X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The findings reveal that HDD casings are made of aluminum-silicon alloys, known as silumin, with distinct microstructural and chemical properties. The chapter also highlights the design and optimization of shredder knives, crucial for processing HDDs. Using Autodesk Inventor 2023 and the Nastran plug-in, the authors analyze the strength and deformation of various knife designs, ultimately selecting a three-blade configuration for its efficiency and durability. The conclusion proposes the use of replaceable knife blades made via selective laser melting, offering a cost-effective solution for prolonged operation. This comprehensive approach to material characterization and knife design sets a new standard for the recycling of electronic devices.
