Abstract

To solve the problem of insufficient stirring in preparation of magnetorheological fluids, the stirring device is optimized by modeling, simulation and experiments. The ordinary agitator is investigated by multiple reference-frame method and Euler–Mixture model, showing that it is of poor stirring effects. On this basis, several monitoring points and lines are selected to monitor the velocity of the agitator in axial, radial and tangential directions. Meanwhile, the varying concentration of solid with time is also monitored to research the influence of blade number, baffle number and stirring speed on stirring performance. The experiments are carried out to evaluate stirring effects of optimized agitator through the sedimentation rate of magnetorheological fluids. The results show that the design of agitator with two-layer blades, six baffles and stirring speed of 20 r/s can significantly reduce the mixing time, about 83%.
