Abstract

This chapter delves into the intricate world of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in aerobic granular sludge, a complex biopolymer with significant market potential. It begins by outlining the importance of EPS identification and characterization, discussing various extraction methods and their impacts on EPS quantity and quality. The chapter then explores advanced identification techniques, such as colorimetric analysis and particle size exclusion chromatography, which have revealed specific EPS components like amino acids, glycosylated amyloid, and sulfated polysaccharides. These components have been linked to high-value applications, including biosensor nanomaterials, flame retardants, and tissue engineering materials.
