The innovative magnesium batteries being developed by researchers at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), the Helmholtz-Institute Ulm (HIU, both Germany), and their partners as part of the European Magnesium Interactive Battery Community research project will, it is hoped, be more powerful, cheaper to produce, and safer than conventional lithium-ion batteries. Magnesium batteries have significant advantages over their lithium-ion counterparts. When used as the anode material, magnesium allows for a higher energy density and is also much safer. The aim of the researchers at the HIU is to gain an understanding of the obstacles caused by the materials and to find new ways of overcoming these problems. The main challenge presented by magnesium batteries is ensuring that they have a long service life.
