Abstract

This chapter delves into the transformative potential of resilient green collective spaces within university campuses, highlighting their role in enhancing sustainability, well-being, and community engagement. Through an in-depth analysis of case studies from various international and national universities, the text explores the implementation of nature-based solutions (NBS) such as green walls, living walls, and outdoor green spaces. These solutions are shown to improve air quality, reduce energy consumption, and foster biodiversity, while also promoting mental and physical well-being among students and faculty. The study focuses on the University of Palermo (UNIPA) campus as a case study, detailing the application of green facades and living walls to existing buildings. The interventions on Building 16 and Building 14 demonstrate distinct approaches to integrating greenery into architectural design, with a focus on low-maintenance, cost-effective solutions. The text also emphasizes the importance of involving the local community in the planning and maintenance of green spaces, fostering a sense of ownership and encouraging active use. The findings contribute to advancing knowledge in sustainable urban planning, offering a scalable and transferable model for universities and urban environments facing similar challenges. The chapter concludes with recommendations for future research and policy, highlighting the potential of green collective spaces to serve as role models for urban sustainability and climate action.
