Abstract

The chapter delves into the resistance characteristics of piles under distributed lateral loading in the perpendicular pile axis direction, with a focus on tsunami-resistant breakwaters. The 2011 tsunami off the Pacific Coast highlighted the need for reinforced breakwaters, leading to the proposal of reinforcing breakwaters with steel pipe piles. The study conducted static model experiments to generalize the external force distribution acting on the piles, revealing the significance of understanding subgrade reaction for predicting pile behavior. The horizontal loading tests on piles under various ground conditions and loading methods uncovered the variability in subgrade reaction coefficients and their depth distribution, dependent on pile deformation modes. The findings highlight the necessity of considering pile deformation modes when using Winkler-Spring type models for subgrade reaction, paving the way for future generalized studies.
