Abstract

The article investigates the critical aspects of resource management in 5G/6G NFV-MEC networks, emphasizing the coexistence of services with contrasting requirements, such as ultra-reliable low-latency communication (URLLC) and enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB). It highlights the essential roles of multi-access edge computing (MEC), network function virtualization (NFV), and network slicing (NS) in accommodating these diverse services. The study introduces a continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC)-based model that incorporates service prioritization, resource scaling, and virtualization overhead to analyze system performance. Key findings include the impact of container quantities, buffer sizes, and service rates on availability, response time, power consumption, and memory usage. The analysis reveals that increasing computational resources enhances service availability and reduces response times but also raises energy and memory consumption. Conversely, improving URLLC service rates leads to better performance and lower resource consumption, offering a more cost-effective solution for network operators. The article concludes with insights into the trade-offs between resource allocation, service prioritization, and energy efficiency, providing a foundation for future research and practical implementations in next-generation networks.
