Abstract

The chapter explores the critical issue of foundation settlement in seismically active zones, focusing on the retrofit of a reinforced concrete raft foundation supporting a mercantile building. The authors delve into the causes of settlement, including design errors and soil properties, and present a detailed case study of a 12-year-old building that experienced settlement due to an earthquake. Using ETABS software, the authors model and analyze the existing raft foundation and propose a retrofit solution involving the addition of new RC beams and an RC jacket slab. The study assesses the effectiveness of the retrofit by evaluating maximum settlements and soil pressures, ultimately identifying the optimal dimensions for the new RC jacket and beams. The chapter highlights the importance of considering both bending moment and shear force reductions in the retrofit design and concludes with recommendations for effective raft foundation retrofitting.
