Abstract

This chapter explores the use of 3D laser scanning to evaluate the structural integrity of a riveted water storage tank. The study identifies significant deformations caused by uneven soil compaction and improper liner installation, which are critical factors affecting tank performance. Through detailed point-cloud processing, the analysis reveals deviations exceeding API 653 standards, emphasizing the need for rigorous monitoring and maintenance. The findings highlight the importance of proper installation and regular inspections to ensure the safety and longevity of water storage tanks. The study concludes that the tank in question requires further evaluation to determine its fitness for service, providing a comprehensive approach to assessing and addressing structural issues in similar tanks.
