Abstract

This chapter reviews the stability of diaphragm wall (D Wall) trenches for underground metro shafts, focusing on analytical and numerical methods. It compares the limit equilibrium method with arching effect, 2D Finite Element Method (FEM), and 3D FEM using Plaxis software. The study highlights the construction sequence of D Walls, the mechanisms ensuring trench stability, and common stability issues. A case study of a metro TBM launching shaft is presented, demonstrating the application of these methods to optimize slurry usage and achieve safe trench excavation. The results show that 3D FEM provides the most accurate and practical solutions for trench stability, considering real-world conditions and panel widths. The chapter concludes with recommendations for optimizing slurry height and unit weight based on the findings.
