Abstract

This chapter provides a comprehensive review of the implications of CRYSTALS-Kyber in LTE networks, with a focus on the X2 handover protocol. It begins by explaining the role of the X2 protocol in ensuring seamless handover between eNodeBs, highlighting the phases of the handover process and the potential security flaws in the post-quantum computing era. The text then delves into the importance of quantum-resistant cryptography, discussing NIST's standardization efforts and the selection of CRYSTALS-Kyber as a promising candidate for post-quantum cryptography. It explores the mathematical foundations of lattice-based cryptography, including the Shortest Vector Problem (SVP) and the Closest Vector Problem (CVP), and their resistance to quantum algorithms. The chapter also provides a detailed overview of the performance of CRYSTALS-Kyber on different platforms, including Intel Haswell and ARM Cortex-M4 CPUs, and discusses the trade-offs between security and performance. It concludes with a proposed methodology for integrating CRYSTALS-Kyber into LTE networks, highlighting the potential impact on network infrastructure and protocol design. The text also includes a practical environment simulation and analysis, assessing the feasibility of integrating CRYSTALS-Kyber into LTE networks and evaluating the impact on handover latency, throughput, and packet loss. This chapter offers valuable insights into the future of LTE network security in the face of quantum computing threats.
