Abstract

The chapter 'Revisiting Silhouette Aggregation' delves into the silhouette coefficient, a widely used measure for assessing clustering quality. It examines the common practice of micro-averaging silhouette scores, which can be sensitive to cluster imbalance, and advocates for the use of macro-averaging as a more robust alternative. The authors introduce a novel per-cluster sampling strategy to improve the effectiveness of macro-averaging, especially in imbalanced datasets. Through synthetic and real-world data experiments, the study demonstrates the superiority of macro-averaging and the importance of appropriate sampling methods in cluster analysis. The chapter concludes by emphasizing the need for a more balanced consideration of aggregation strategies and sampling techniques in clustering evaluations.
