Abstract

The Mental Health Continuum Short Form (MHC-SF) is widely used to measure subjective, psychological, and social wellbeing. This study revisits its factor structure to determine if it measures a general wellbeing factor or distinct dimensions. Using multiple studies and advanced statistical methods, the analysis reveals that the MHC-SF items load strongly on a unidimensional factor, casting doubt on the scale's ability to distinguish between different wellbeing domains. The findings suggest that the MHC-SF may be better suited for assessing overall wellbeing rather than specific dimensions. This has important implications for clinical practice, as it highlights the need for more specific measures to target distinct wellbeing domains. The study also discusses the implications for future research and the potential use of alternative flourishing frameworks.
