Abstract

The article delves into the effects of revolutions on constitutional design, using a comprehensive dataset to compare revolutionary constitutions with their non-revolutionary predecessors. It focuses on five key dimensions: overall length, preamble length, text devoted to rights, mentions of democracy, and rigidity. The study employs advanced matching methods to mitigate selection bias and estimate causal effects, revealing that while revolutionary constitutions may not significantly differ in all aspects, they are associated with increased de facto democracy. The findings offer valuable insights into the dynamics of constitutional design following revolutions, contributing to the broader understanding of political and legal transformations.
