Abstract

The article investigates the use of xanthan gum (XG) biopolymer solutions to enhance the rheological properties and erosion resistance of riverbank soils. Existing erosion control techniques, such as concrete structures and cement grouting, pose environmental threats and high manufacturing costs. Biopolymers, including XG, have shown promise as eco-friendly alternatives. The study collected soil from the Brahmaputra River and stabilized it with varying concentrations of XG solutions. The rheological properties of the biopolymer solutions were characterized using a rheometer, revealing shear-thinning behavior and increased viscosity with concentration. The stabilized soil samples were tested for unconfined compressive strength, water absorption, and erosion resistance. The results showed improved strength and delayed erosion with higher XG concentrations, but the treated soil became soft in wet conditions. The study concludes that while XG treatment shows potential, further improvements are needed to enhance its effectiveness in wet environments, possibly through the addition of clays like kaolinite or bentonite.
