Abstract

The increasing demand for higher bandwidth in communication systems has driven researchers to explore higher frequency bands, particularly the K-band. This article focuses on the design of a three-stage ring voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) that leverages active resistors and inductors to achieve superior performance. The use of active components addresses the limitations of traditional passive elements, such as spiral inductors, by offering higher tunability, improved quality factors, and enhanced integration capabilities. The proposed VCO architecture demonstrates a wide tuning range from 18.3 GHz to 21.77 GHz, making it ideal for K-band applications. Simulation results highlight the design's efficiency in terms of power consumption, phase noise, and figure of merit (FOM), showcasing its potential for advanced wireless communication systems. The article provides a comprehensive analysis of the circuit design, simulation results, and performance metrics, offering a detailed comparison with existing VCO designs. This makes it a valuable resource for those seeking to understand the latest advancements in VCO technology and its applications in high-frequency communication systems.
