Abstract

It is established that centrifugal pumps are more reliable than gear pumps. However, their efficiency decreases when the viscosity of the fluid pumped by the centrifugal pump increases, which makes their use at some oil facilities inadvisable. An accident risk assessment was made at a hazardous production facility for use of different types of pumps. Several measures have been developed to reduce accident risk when the facility is equipped with gear pumps. It is concluded that some petrochemical and oil refining facilities of the Russian Federation can be equipped with gear pumps.
