Abstract

This chapter examines the prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WRMSD) among workers in micro and small-sized enterprises (MSSEs) in Copiapó, Chile. The study identifies key risk factors, including repetitive work, manual handling of loads, and high mental workload, which are prevalent among both male and female workers. It also highlights the precarious working conditions, such as informal employment, lack of social security, and inadequate workplace safety measures. The analysis reveals that 68.1% of workers reported musculoskeletal pain in the past week, with significant differences in pain sites between genders. The study concludes that urgent ergonomic interventions are needed to address these issues and improve workplace safety in MSSEs. By focusing on the unique challenges faced by these enterprises, the chapter offers valuable insights into the systemic issues contributing to labor precariousness and provides actionable recommendations for policy makers and employers.
