The trend away from haptic feedback and towards touchscreens is not the ideal solution for interactive systems in cars. Although many of the driver’s individual interactions are still safe, bringing together hundreds of functions has dramatically increased the complexity of the systems. One of the consequences of hyper-digitality is that drivers are starting to lose control of their vehicles. An example of this is the time needed for a driver to operate a satnav while on the move, which can take up to 48 s. The automotive industry is counteracting this problem by introducing attention tracking systems and artificial intelligence functions. …
