Electric drive systems have been able to gain a foothold more quickly in less price-sensitive segments such as premium and luxury-class vehicles than in compact and midsize segments. However, since the majority of car sales are in the latter two segments, economies of scale are quickly needed in order to reduce costs. According to surveys, the high initial purchasing price is the main reason for reluctance among car buyers. This price can be lowered above all by modular, optimally matched powertrain components that fit for a variety of different applications, thus contributing to faster scaling. …
