Robots are moving out of the closed environment of factories and laboratories into the open environment of our cities. In this environment, a robot is likely to encounter unsolicited interactions and unscripted contingencies. These encounters will strike most of us as ordinary interactions, but they will, however, test the limit of what this robot has been programmed to do and what humans can expect from this robot. Failure to respond appropriately to such ordinary interactions in urban life not only can impact the social credibility of this robot (e.g., people’s perception, acceptance, and trust of robots), but also can result in undesirable and sometimes irreversible consequences for people directly or indirectly involved in these human–robot interactions. …
