Abstract

The article investigates the influence of GP II zones and metastable η' precipitates on the environmentally assisted cracking (EAC) behavior of AA 7050 alloy. It compares the effects of modified aging (MA3) and retrogression and reaging (RRA) treatments on the alloy's strength, deformation behavior, and EAC resistance. The study highlights the role of microstructure, particularly the volume fraction and composition of matrix precipitates, in controlling hydrogen evolution and trapping, which in turn affects EAC susceptibility. The authors present detailed experimental results, including mechanical testing, microstructural analysis, and cathodic polarization studies, to elucidate the mechanisms governing EAC in AA 7050 alloy. The findings have significant implications for designing aluminum alloys with enhanced strength and EAC resistance.
